How to dress like an Italian woman
Sophia Loren famously said the fountain of youth was all about ‘your mind, talents and creativity’.
Let’s be honest here, a great wardrobe doesn’t half help and the Italian woman’s is based around high quality basics and timeless, forever essentials – call them what you will.
Oh – and Black, Black and more Black. I only began wearing black-on-black ensembles after visiting Cortina many years ago – how I longed to blend in with the stunningly stylish locals.
It’s no coincidence that many MELYR pieces have Italian names.
The chic and mysterious Italian woman has mastered the art of monochrome sophistication.
She is the poster girl for stripped-back, uncomplicated elegance and understated simplicity.
The Italian colour palette tends to be predominantly neutral and muted, dominated by flattering easy-to-wear pieces in shades of caramel and ivory, khaki and russet to compliment and lift as well as mix and match with the ever-present black. Bold prints and brights are used sparingly to add a touch of fun and individuality.
I marvel at the Italian woman’s ability to look so polished with seemingly effortless ease. Of course this could be an illusion, but I believe her dedication to good tailoring, natural fibres and a less-is-more attitude is the essence to capturing her unmatched classic style. Fast fashion is an absolute No No – it’s quality over quantity every time.
Just as important is a wonderful sense of La Dolce Vita – that rare combination of looking relaxed and sophisticated, elegant and easygoing. Italian women embrace and emphasise their curves with joy and abandon (possibly explaining their love of gorgeous lingerie). They enjoy their clothes, every day is a special occasion – even if it’s going grocery shopping and nothing is ‘for best’.
Carefully chosen accessories are key elements to capturing the look. Italian women invest in luxurious bags and belts that transcend the seasons (and the decades). Statement jewellery, whether a bold necklace or striking earrings elevate the simple into the stunning. Silk scarves enhance the mood and add a touch colour, cashmere wraps are a luxurious must-have. If in doubt, add some tortoiseshell sunglasses, a great hat and never forget thgat Italy is shaped like a Boot – enough said!
Sophia knew the power of the perfect, curve skimming white shirt.
